Why Independence Day is more than hot dogs, burgers and fireworks…

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

You know, I love the 4th of July and what it stands for. I consider myself lucky to live in a country where we are free. I love that 233 years ago, our founding fathers declared our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The
pursuit of happiness, however, does not imply guaranteed success, only the freedom to succeed or fail based on our own merits.

All too often, when I am out somewhere, watching the T.V. or listening to the radio etc. I here people talking about how “so and so” got lucky and their company started making a ton of money, or they got a promotion, or paid off their house etc.
Really?? Did they get “lucky”, or is it more likely that they worked their butt off and “earned” that promotion, or saved up to pay off their house, or worked really hard and put blood, sweat and tears into building a good business? But when
someone loses their job, it’s the companies fault. When someone loses their house, it’s the banks fault. NO, it’s not! Why is it that we are “lucky” when we do something good, and “someone else is responsible” when we screw up??

The fact of the matter is, that we are all responsible for our own lives. The Declaration of Independence gives us all the freedom to succeed or fail based on our own merits, but when someone else succeeds where we fail, we don’t like it,
so we say they are lucky, and when someone screws up, everyone (including them) blames it on someone else because we all feel bad about the situation. What we need to do is understand that if we want to succeed, we have to work hard to get
there, and we shouldn’t take away someone else’s acheivement by saying they are lucky. If we fail, we need to work hard not to do it again, and not blame everyone BUT ourselves if it happens.

Happy Independence Day everyone. Make sure that this year you give people praise for their accomplishments, accept praise for your accomplishments, don’t blame anyone else for your screw ups and don’t let other people blame someone
else when they tell you their “bad luck” story. This Saturday, celebrate the fact that you have the right to succeed as much, or as little, as you want to!

Mucho Moolah! Monday’s Money Saving Tips…Blowout sales…

Monday, June 29th, 2009

This weekend, Americans all over the nation will be in their backyards, grilling out, having friends and family over and setting off fireworks to celebrate the independence of our nation (we hope that they are remembering the 4th for our independence from Great Britain, but I digress). Another tradition on this holiday, however, is the 4th of July blowout sales that most stores have and most women shop. These are the sales of the season, where everything is on dramatic discount, to clear away the old and make room for the next season’s clothes. The problem is that most people don’t shop right, and so they spend a bunch of money they either don’t have or should’ve spent on something else (i.e. a bill). So, today’s money saving tip is my motto while shopping for clothes: “shop often, but buy sparingly”.

I am all about a deal. I love the idea of getting something on sale, and the steeper the discount, the happier I am…but I don’t buy something simply because it IS on sale. If, for example, you are holding a black purse in your hand, intending to purchase it because it’s on sale for $10, but you have 5 other black purses at home that are roughly the same shape and size as that one…put the purse down and walk away! I have seen people buy purple, faux fur scarves because they were on sale. I mean, it’s bad enough that someone manufactured purple faux fur, but to be convinced that it’s a good deal because it’s on sale is lunacy. Here’s a hint: If you weren’t going to buy it in the first place, or didn’t need it, then it’s not a good deal no matter what the discount, since you’re spending money you didn’t intend to spend! In other words, don’t buy stuff just to buy stuff…that’s what
children do, not grown ups!

When you go out to the stores this weekend to shop the deals, keep these tips in mind:

  • When you shop for clothes, you should keep a list of what, if anything, you need (i.e. black pants)
  • Don’t buy it unless you are absolutely sure you will wear it
  • Only purchase it if you feel at ease in it (if you think you look short, fat etc. in it, you won’t be comfy or confident, and won’t EVER wear it)
  • Unless you can name to yourself at LEAST 2 things at home that you can wear with it, don’t even think about purchasing it

That’s it! Good luck, and remember: Shop OFTEN, buy SPARINGLY!
