I love the sentiment but also have one observation to make. My husband and I do what we can to take care of ourselves, but at a certain point one also has to weigh the cost of your own time spent doing something (i.e., could your time be better spent doing something else?) vs. the cost of paying someone else to do the something for you. For us, this means having a cleaner come to the house every two weeks — they do the whole house once a month and the main floor every two weeks. It’s not that we can’t and aren’t willing to do it, but rather that I have a demanding career as a patent attorney, my husband has an exhausting career as a high school teacher, and we have a 22 month old and 2 dogs to distract us in our free time. That’s not to say that these costs come at the expense of other savings (our only debt is our mortgage, we have extensive retirement and emergency savings, and we already have extensive savings for our munchkin’s education). But if we weren’t already financially “sound”, I absolutely would agree with your advice that these extra expenses should be cut out in order to increase savings.

I have a friend who saved alot of money doing this. he taught me. Now i am doing a lot better my self. This is not just about money it is about self respect it is about loving your self first. Make savings an expense that way it is not lying when you say how poor you are. Have fun with this. You shoould be laughing inside when you poor mouth. Use the statement, “If I had your money I’ld burn mine” try to keep a straight face. Don’t accept second class behavior from yourself or anybody you spend time with.

another tip for buying furniture is already having a set price in mind… for example; i had seen a bedroom set for sale and went to check it out, i already knew that i didn’t need the complete set just some of the pieces and i already knew what i wanted to pay for these pieces alone, after talking to the sales person and telling them what pieces i needed and which i didn’t, i asked what kind of deal could we work out if any. they ended up working out a great deal even offering to sell the floor model for a lesser cost, I even made sure that if I changed my mind on the floor model after having it home, or if something ended up being wrong that i could bring it back. This was no problem they said.

Better yet shop at the stores, then order from furnituregeek.com – i saved $3,300 on my furniture there. Everyone knows most furniture is built in North Carolina – well furniture geek is like buying DIRECT – and NO SALES TAX!! I swear this sounds like I work for them – but i don’t – just couldn’t be happier with their service. Had to wait for a truck to be heading this way – but delivery was minimal and the guys handled with ‘white glove’ service. Incredible! In this day and age, everything can be had cheaper if you do your homework and purchase online. The days of haggling over price with a salesperson is long over – because when it’s all said and done even if you think they are going to ‘bat’ for you – they know what they plan on selling it for and you could be as persuasive as possible and it’s limited in results. I know exactly what you are talking about! We used to go rent movies every Tuesday (new release day) to rent 2 to 3 movies every week…which total about $15 every week!!! Now we watch about 2 to 3 movies per week that we rent online and only pay $16 a month! I encourage this!!!!!

Great post! Boy have I been there. And often still find myself there.

Another one I like to use is, "Sorry I've already spent all my "fun" money for this pay period. Catch me after the 15th!" That doesn't make it sound like I'm on the verge of foreclosure but still gets the point across.

Hey, you should check out upromise.com. Basically you set up an account with them and you save money for college from things like shopping at the grocery store to ordering flowers online. It’s by no means going to save enough for your child’s tuition cost, but it’s free and they give you money just for scanning your Kroger card (for example). Great tips!

Great point Michael! We love Roth IRAs in our house! We use them to sock away money on top of the 401k! Actually, until 2002 (I believe) the Coverdell ESA was called an Education IRA! Thanks for the input!

These is some great advice! Something that a lot of people also overlook is a Roth IRA. Any money you put in is after-tax, and you can withdraw any of it down the line with no penalties to save for your childrens education. And, if it turns out they don’t need it, you’ll have a hefty nest egg that you can withdraw tax-free when you retire.

I disagree with stating that everyone should exclude going to coffeehouses because of the price… First let me say that i do in fact enjoy going to Starbucks and Borders several times a week. I, however, do not go out to dinner at restaurants regularly, and I pack my lunch everyday for work. Going for coffee with friends and family is as I see it an excellent and money saving way to spend time together and as you stated spend somewhere between $3 and $6, which is much less than say going to dinner together. Further more my family and i have just gotten back from taking our second vacation to Hawaii(once this year and once last year)… so as to say that by going to Starbucks regularly has prevented us from getting what we want is somewhat ridiculous. And as a last point if spending time with friends at a coffee house makes your daily life more enjoyable throughout the entire year, I think that is worth $500 over the course of the entire year.
